We wanted to create our dream school. A place we would love our daughters to grow, learn and discover the world around them. A place where the sacred time of childhood would be celebrated and respected and children's instinctive love for the natural world would be encouraged and nurtured. We called the school 'Hayati', which means 'my life' in Arabic.
Hayati Homeschool is housed in a spacious tent for the younger children and in a thatched roof lodge for the older kids, all located on our organic farm-garden at the foothills of the Atlas mountains in Morocco. About 30 minutes drive outside of Marrakech, we are surrounded by olive groves and wheat fields in a quiet and secluded spot not far from the market town of Ourika.
Our homeschool is open to six children in each section (two of whom are our two daughters) between the ages of 3 and 11 years old. The children learn in 3 languages - English, Modern Standard Arabic and French. Each language will be given a full day's focus, with games, activities, singing and story-telling all taking place in the language of the day.
Hayati homeschool has three teachers in total (English, Arabic and French) and an assistant for the younger children. On a daily basis there is one teacher present who focuses on her language helping the children to instinctively switch to the relevant language depending on which teacher they have. An assistant is also present for the younger children to help with activities and ensure adult supervision at all times. The school is open from 09.30-16.00 but children can come at any time in the day. We provide two snacks and a hot lunch - all our food is homemade, healthy and free of additives/preservatives/nasty chemicals. Weekly menus are approved by a nutritionist and we encourage the children to take part in food preparation and presentation. Please see our food and menus page for more information.
